The Office of the Sheriff at Common Law exists to keep the Sovereign's peace in the jurisdiction of Canada, as that peace was received at Confederation through the constitutional order imported from the United Kingdom. This Office is not a creation of statute. Its authority is anterior to Parliament, derivative of the Sovereign, and held in the common-law register of Canadian constitutional life.

Le Bureau du shérif en common law existe pour maintenir la paix du Souverain dans la juridiction du Canada, telle que cette paix a été reçue à la Confédération par l’ordre constitutionnel importé du Royaume-Uni. Ce Bureau n’est pas une création de la loi. Son autorité est antérieure au Parlement, dérivée du Souverain, et maintenue dans le registre de common law de la vie constitutionnelle canadienne.

The Office serves the Heirs of Canada's juridic Crown — the natural persons to whom the constitutional trust runs — in the distributed peace-keeping tradition that has operated in the common law since the Norman Conquest. We welcome Heirs who wish to serve in their own regional jurisdictions to contact the Office, take the Oath of Allegiance prescribed by the Fifth Schedule to the Constitution Act, 1867, and join the peace-line as peers.

Le Bureau sert les Héritiers de la Couronne juridique du Canada — les personnes physiques au bénéfice desquelles court la fiducie constitutionnelle — dans la tradition de maintien distribué de la paix qui opère en common law depuis la Conquête normande. The Common-Law RegisterLe registre de common law

The inherited constitutional order received at Confederation through the preamble to the Constitution Act, 1867. It operates on its own terms, anterior to Parliament, and is the register in which the Sovereign's peace is kept by the common-law Sheriff. Liberties here are pre-existing — not granted.L’ordre constitutionnel hérité, reçu à la Confédération par le préambule de la Loi constitutionnelle de 1867. Il opère selon ses propres termes, antérieurement au Parlement, et constitue le registre dans lequel le shérif en common law maintient la paix du Souverain. The Statutory-Prerogative RegisterLe registre législatif-prérogatif

The apparatus created by Parliament and administered through the Crown's statutory prerogative. This register is the ordinary operating layer of modern government. It does not reach into the common-law register, and the common-law register does not require its permission to operate.L’appareil créé par le Parlement et administré par la prérogative législative de la Couronne. The registers are sealed against intrusion from the statutory side.
